Liege Airport has reported growth in aircraft movements and cargo tonnage since the start of the year, with May 2024 continuing this positive trend.
For May 2024, the airport recorded an 11.3% increase in cargo aircraft movements compared to May 2023, rising from 2,026 to 2,256.
Cargo tonnage saw a 13.4% increase, with 95,905 tonnes handled compared to 84,582 tonnes in May 2023.
This growth surpasses the global trend for freight transport, as highlighted in DHL’s latest monthly report, which noted a 9% increase in global air freight demand year-over-year for May.
The report attributes the growth to rising e-commerce demand and a shift from sea to air freight due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
When compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, Liege Airport’s performance is even more impressive. According to ACI Europe, April 2024 saw freight traffic 2.5% above April 2019 levels.
Liege Airport, however, reported a 33% increase for April 2024 compared to April 2019, and an average growth of 28% for the first five months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2019.
