Nordisk Aviation secures Emirates deal for fire-resistant cargo containers
Nordisk Aviation, a provider of unit load devices (ULDs), has signed an agreement with Emirates for the supply of advanced fire-resistant AKE containers designed to enhance cargo and baggage safety.
Emirates will receive up to 10,000 state-of-the-art, lightweight AKE containers which are engineered to mitigate the risks associated with lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery fires, a growing concern in air transport.
Nordisk Aviation’s AKE containers offer robust fire protection against Li-ion battery incidents, and their design prioritises sustainability, with most components being 100% recyclable, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.
To validate the containers’ fire resistance, Nordisk Aviation collaborated with Emirates on a rigorous testing programme. While the aerospace standard (SAE AS8992) primarily addresses Class A paper fires, Nordisk Aviation and Emirates developed a more stringent testing protocol.
The tests exceeded industry requirements, simulating a severe fire scenario inside an AKE container. The trial involved 1,000 18650 Li-ion battery cells distributed across 60 pieces of luggage, alongside other flammable materials such as clothing, toiletries, and alcohol bottles.
The Nordisk Aviation AKE’s innovative design allowed flue gases to escape while preventing oxygen inflow, successfully containing the fire for the entire six-hour test period.
With Li-ion batteries – both declared and undeclared – posing a significant risk in air cargo and baggage, Nordisk Aviation’s extensive research and testing have identified critical factors influencing fire intensity. This ensures their containers are equipped to handle such incidents effectively.
This agreement not only provides Emirates with cutting-edge fire protection technology but also establishes a foundation for continued collaboration and innovation in aviation safety.
Chris Kumar, general manager at Nordisk Aviation, said: “Safety and innovation are at the core of our mission. This partnership with Emirates demonstrates our commitment to providing industry-leading solutions that meet the evolving safety challenges of the aviation sector.
“By combining advanced technology with sustainability, we are setting new standards for fire-resistant cargo containers and help solve the problems faced by our strategic partners.”
