Wizz Air has announced that it had suspended all UK flights to Romania from 6 April until 18 April 2020, due to travel restrictions introduced by the Romanian government to contain the spread of coronavirus (covid-19).

In a statement, the airline said: “Passengers who booked directly on wizzair.com or via the airline’s mobile app will be informed of flight suspensions via e-mail and automatically refunded 120 per cent of the original fare as airline credit, which can be used in the next 24 months towards future Wizz Air flights.

“Alternatively, impacted passengers can choose a cash refund for 100 per cent of the original fare and will be informed about the steps for a bank transfer or transfer to a bank card in a separate email.

“Passengers who made their bookings via travel agencies – including online travel agencies – should get in touch with the company from which they purchased their tickets.”

The airline added: “Wizz Air sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by these cancellations, and thanks loyal customers for their patience during these challenging times. As ever, the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remains the airline’s top priority.”

Last week, Wizz Air reported that it had seen passenger carryings collapse by more than a third in March due to the impact of coronavirus on European travel.

As a result, the low-cost airline was forced to cut capacity by 34 per cent after traveller numbers fell by more than 35 per cent year-on-year.

The low-cost carrier has also been forced to cancel more than 50 routes from Luton airport until 1 May.

Wizz Air said: “As a result of the covid-19 pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions introduced by governments across Europe, Wizz Air had to reduce its capacity by 34 per cent year-on-year for the month of March.

“Wizz Air operated rescue flights throughout the month of March from Germany to Ukraine, from Malta and Croatia to North Macedonia as well as from North America to Hungary in co-operation with governments and organisations in order to bring passengers back to their home countries.

“Wizz Air is operating flights between China and Hungary in order to deliver medical equipment such as protective gear and coronavirus test kits ordered by the Hungarian government.”
