AIX2024: Soisa unveils sustainable organic aircraft seat armrest made from corn

Soisa Aircraft Interiors has launched a sustainable and organic aircraft seat armrest made of corn particles.

The Mexican firm said the innovation represents “a significant milestone” in its “dedication to sustainability and innovation within the aerospace industry”.

This initiative builds on Soisa’s From Waste to Wonder programme, which repurposes materials otherwise destined for landfill into items like wallets, bags and pouches for the its community.

In 2023, Soisa produced 5,200 armrests, utilising around 2,000 square feet of polyethylene foam. This resulted in nearly 2,600 kg of CO2 emissions.

By switching to use a biodegradable material derived from corn waste, Soisa says it will significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

The firm said the material may also offer significant cost benefits by streamlining its manufacturing processes. The armrest is poised to undergo testing and certification.

Jacobo Mesta, head of sales and growth strategy at Soisa, said:As the aerospace industry intensifies its focus on sustainability practices, airlines worldwide are increasingly striving to minimise their environmental footprint.

“Soisa is at the forefront of this movement, pioneering engineering in aerospace by thinking outside the box and exploring alternatives which promote a sustainable future.

“This innovative design not only highlights our commitment to environmental responsibility but also ensures that our products retain their aesthetic appeal, comfort, and high quality.”

The organic armrest marks SOISA’s initial venture into exploring biodegradable materials.

Soisa specialises in cabin upholstery, offering dress covers, cushions, curtains, armrests, carpets, insulation panels, acoustic panels, and VIP Seats.

Clients include United Airlines, Emirates, FlyDubai, Etihad, Royal Brunei, and Singapore Airlines.
