The blaze at a single, unguarded substation outside of the airport’s perimeter has closed the UK’s primary aviation hub until at least midnight while the problem is resolved.

Several Qantas flights that were already in the air when the shutdown occurred have diverted to Paris CDG. Meanwhile, Ryanair has added a number of what it calls ‘rescue flights’
Apart from the total shutdown of the airport, local reports suggest that 150 residents near the substation have been evacuated, with two dozen being treated for smoke inhalation.
Airport officials say that the facility is scheduled to reopen at 00:00 on March 22nd.
