DHL Aviation expands West African reach with two more freighters
DHL Aviation has expanded its West African air network with the introduction of two fully branded Boeing 737-400 freighters at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, underlining the group’s continued investment in Sub-Saharan Africa’s logistics infrastructure.
The additional aircraft are set to boost airlift capacity from Nigeria’s largest aviation hub, supporting faster transit times, improved delivery predictability and wider regional reach for customers operating across West Africa and beyond.
DHL said the move responds to rising demand from sectors including e-commerce, perishables, energy, and life sciences and healthcare.
As the only integrator operating a dedicated air network across Sub-Saharan Africa, DHL has been steadily increasing its aviation uplift to support trade flows within the region and to key intercontinental markets.
The two 737-400s will be integrated into DHL Aviation’s African air network, strengthening connectivity on critical Africa to Europe and Africa to Asia trade lanes.
Anthony Beckley, vice president of operations and aviation at DHL Express SSA, said “As trade expands across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area, businesses are demanding predictable transit times and consistent delivery performance.
“The two dedicated aircraft will be integrated into DHL Aviation’s African air network, strengthening connections on critical Africa–Europe and Africa–Asia trade lanes.”
Beyond capacity growth, DHL positioned the move as part of a broader strategy focused on sustainable, technology-led expansion. The company continues to roll out digitalisation initiatives, including AI-enabled route optimisation and digital customs tools, aimed at improving network efficiency and reliability.
In parallel, DHL is piloting renewable energy and alternative fuel projects across its facilities as it works towards longer-term environmental objectives.
Riaan Vorster, aviation senior director at DHL Aviation SSA, said: “With this latest investment, DHL Express reaffirms its position as the logistics partner of choice for businesses seeking to grow their presence in regional and global value chains.”
The deployment of the Lagos-based freighters comes as West Africa continues to see strong growth in cross-border trade and e-commerce activity, placing increased emphasis on reliable, time-definite air logistics to support both regional distribution and international exports.
