Katowice Airport achieves record-breaking Q1 cargo traffic figures
From January to the end of March 2024, the cargo terminal at Poland’s Katowice Airport handled 9,838 tonnes of freight, a 7.9% increase over the same period in 2023.
According to the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.) – the airport’s managing company – the Q1 2024 recorded figures make it the best first quarter of the year for cargo traffic in Katowice Airport’s history.
The achieved result was 480 tonnes more (+5.1%) than the one noted for the first three months of 2022, when the cargo terminal handled a record-breaking 9,358 tonnes of freight.
Artur Tomasik, the president of the board of GTL S.A., said: “Last year’s post-pandemic adjustment of air freight caused an 11% drop of the volume of cargo handled at Katowice Airport in comparison with the record-breaking 2022.
“However, in the first quarter of 2024 air cargo began to improve and grow; consequently, we are expecting good results and it cannot be ruled out that 2024 will be the best year in the history of Katowice Airport when it comes to cargo traffic.
“Cargo is an important segment of traffic for us. Therefore, we have planned a big expansion of the air cargo area in the Katowice Airport investment programme for 2024-2028, including the construction of at least one new cargo terminal.”
