Canadian air cargo carrier, WestJet Cargo, has announced a major expansion of its cargo network following the successful integration of leisure carrier Sunwing Airlines into the WestJet Group.

The move adds 18 Boeing 737 aircraft to WestJet’s fleet, unlocking new freight service opportunities and boosting belly cargo capacity on popular Caribbean routes.

The expanded operations will see increased cargo space to Cuban destinations including Holguin (HOG), Santa Clara (SNU), and Varadero (VRA), with each flight offering up to 2.5 tonnes of additional capacity.

“This aircraft capacity is a welcome addition, both for increased belly cargo throughput in Eastern Canada and for guest connectivity through WestJet Airlines,” said Julius Mooney, director of commercial cargo at WestJet.

The network expansion builds on the airline’s Toronto–Havana service, which began in 2023, and now includes daily service from Toronto (YYZ) to Varadero, four weekly flights to Santa Clara, and three to Holguin. From Montreal (YUL), WestJet Cargo has introduced a daily service to Varadero and four weekly services to Holguin.

“Canada is Cuba’s fourth largest trading partner, and this unique economic relationship has opened amazing opportunities for our clients and our business,” Mooney added. “We look forward to expanding across even more cargo destinations in the coming months.”

Additional growth includes daily service increases between Toronto and Cancun (CUN), Montego Bay (MBJ), and Punta Cana (PUJ), with frequency also rising on Toronto routes to Puerto Plata (POP) and Liberia (LIR).
