Fiege Air Cargo Logistics (FACL) will take over the operative handling and co-ordination of inbound and outbound standard shipments at the Lufthansa Cargo Centre (LCC) in Frankfurt.

The process will take places over several phases and will be complete by mid-2021. The physical cargo-handling processes at LCC have already been largely outsourced to various external service providers for a number of years.

In the course of digitalisation, the process landscape at LCC was standardised across the board and consistently aligned with the material flow.

“Our future partner contributes additional expertise in the area of digitalisation, as well as efficient design and implementation of warehouse processes”, explained Lufthansa Cargo’s VP of handling in Frankfurt and head of the LCC, Dr Mohammad Ali Seiraffi.

“At the same time, the new co-operation model will reduce the number of direct interfaces for Lufthansa Cargo, enabling us to make optimum use of the advantages of digitisation.

FACL will be an important partner for us in all aspects of physical handling at the Frankfurt hub”, he noted.

Commenting on the partnership, Fiege MD Felix Scherberich said: “We look forward to contributing our expertise in digitisation to the Lufthansa Cargo Centre as part of a long-term co-operation.

“We will help to further enhance the operational quality and synchronise the logistics processes in ground handling with the modernised IT infrastructure of the LCC”.

The planning and control of the cargo processes, as well as the overall responsibility for the processes, will remain in the hands of Lufthansa Cargo. The new co-operation will not result in any changes for the cargo airline’s customers.

At the peak of the coronavirus, Lufthansa landed a passenger aircraft at Frankfurt loaded with around 30 tonnes of freight, after flying in from China with a flight time of 11 hours and six minutes.

Felix Scherberich and Benjamin Looser are behind the launch of the newly founded company. FACL is a subsidiary in the Industry and Tyres division of the Fiege Logistics Foundation.

The focus of the Fiege Group is on contract logistics and it works with a large number of renowned customers.
