As I write this, Elon Musk is idling his day away by engaging in a war of words with Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.
Aside from the fact that I think the two of them deserve each other, it is interesting to note what they are arguing about.
Musk is of the opinion that the airline should provide Wi-Fi (supplied by his own Starlink system, naturally), while O’Leary says that such a system adds complexity, weight and drag from the radome, outweighing any revenue it would bring in.
He has a point. Set-up costs are high, and if you are going to introduce a charge for something it needs to work reliably. Point-to-point flights on Ryanair’s network are relatively short, which is why the airline has resisted introducing amenities such as in-seat power, arguing that devices can be charged while waiting at the airport.
