AerCap has ordered 15 additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, taking its portfolio of the widebody aircraft to approximately 140 and reinforcing its position as the leasing industry’s largest 787 customer.

The agreement, announced at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow, also includes substitution rights for the larger 787-10, allowing AerCap to switch part or all of the order should customer demand favour the higher-capacity variant.

The latest investment reflects continued demand from airlines for fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft while providing AerCap with additional flexibility to meet future fleet requirements through leasing rather than direct purchases.

Aengus Kelly, chief executive of AerCap, said: “As demand for modern, fuel-efficient widebody airplanes continues to grow, this transaction enables us to provide our customers with greater access to one of the industry’s most versatile and sought-after airplane families.

“The 787 has consistently demonstrated strong operating economics and exceptional performance across a wide range of route networks.”

AerCap said the option to substitute aircraft for the 787-10 provides greater flexibility for airline customers seeking additional capacity.

The largest member of the Dreamliner family offers around 50 more seats than the 787-9 while reducing fuel use and emissions by 25% compared with the aircraft it replaces.

The lessor said its expanding Dreamliner portfolio will enable airlines to renew fleets and respond to market demand without committing to direct aircraft purchases during a period of macro-economic uncertainty.

AerCap became the first leasing company to take delivery of a Boeing 787 in 2013.
