Recently appointed as a DfT Aviation Ambassador, Emma Garnham reflects on a 25-year career, the importance of people and standards, and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in aviation.

Career journey

My career began at 16 on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) with Lunn Poly, then one of the UK’s largest high street travel agencies. I worked my way up to branch manager before joining the travel department at American Express.

Although I enjoyed travel, I realised I much preferred the fast-paced environment of airports. I took a seasonal summer contract as a check-in agent with Groundstar at Gatwick Airport, supporting Monarch Airlines, and never looked back. Fast forward 25 years and I am now vice president – business operations at aviation services company Unifi.

I have been incredibly fortunate to experience a wide variety of roles across the industry. While my love of travel first attracted me to aviation, airport operations are where I truly belong. No two days are ever the same, and every role contributes to the wider ecosystem that keeps people, businesses and global connectivity moving.

Early in my career I recognised the importance of standards, compliance and teamwork in delivering safe, efficient operations. That led me to specialise in aviation security, audit readiness and regulatory compliance, building experience across multiple locations and contracts in both frontline operations and strategic leadership.

Key lessons, experiences and influences

Throughout my career, one lesson has remained constant: people are at the heart of success. High-performing teams, clear communication and strong leadership are what enable organisations to consistently deliver excellent results.

I have also been fortunate to work alongside experienced colleagues and inspiring leaders who challenged me to think critically, stay solutions-focused and continually raise standards. Their support and mentorship have played a significant role in both my professional and personal development.

Most rewarding aspects of the role

What I find most rewarding is the opportunity to improve operational standards on a larger scale. Aviation is an industry that demands excellence every day, and that constant challenge, combined with the chance to make a meaningful difference, continues to motivate me.

Above all, it is the people I work with. Being surrounded by colleagues who share the same passion for aviation makes every day worthwhile.

Being appointed as a DfT Aviation Ambassador is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Personally, it is a proud moment to be recognised within an industry that has given me so much. Professionally, it provides an opportunity to share my experiences, challenge perceptions and inspire others to consider careers in aviation.

I believe we all have a responsibility to use our platforms to help build an industry that is fit for the future and accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or career path.

Goals as an Aviation Ambassador

I plan to continue doing what I enjoy most: engaging with schools, colleges and early-career professionals, sharing my own journey and offering practical advice.

It is important to show that aviation offers an incredible range of careers and that there is no single route into the industry. Every journey is different, and every role has value.

Advice to aspiring aviation professionals

Aviation can seem like a difficult industry to break into, but there are far more opportunities than many people realise. My advice would be:

• Be open to entry-level roles – they provide invaluable experience and a strong foundation.
• Focus on transferable skills – communication, teamwork, attention to detail and accountability are highly valued.
• Seek experience and ask questions – curiosity and a willingness to learn will always set you apart.
• Be resilient and patient – careers in aviation are built over time through experience and continuous development.
• Say yes to opportunities – especially the ones that make you feel a little nervous.

Most importantly, stay committed. Aviation is a demanding but incredibly rewarding industry, and those who are adaptable, motivated and willing to keep learning will find opportunities to grow.
