Boeing and Alaska Airlines announce historic order

Boeing and Alaska Airlines have announced the carrier’s largest-ever aircraft order

Boeing and Alaska Airlines have announced the carrier’s largest-ever aircraft order, supporting its long-term strategy to expand both domestic and international route networks.

The order includes 105 737-10 aircraft, with options for a further 35 of the largest 737 MAX variant, alongside five 787 Dreamliners to support long-haul expansion to Europe and Asia.

Alaska Air Group chief executive and president, Ben Minicucci, said: “This fleet investment builds on the strong foundation Alaska has created to support steady, scalable and sustained growth, and is another building block in executing our Alaska Accelerate strategic plan.

“These planes will fuel our expansion to more destinations across the globe and ensure our guests travel aboard the newest, most fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art aircraft.

“We are incredibly proud to be partnering with Boeing, a Pacific Northwest neighbour and a company that stands as a symbol of American innovation and manufacturing.”

The 737-10 will play a central role in renewing and growing Alaska Airlines’ single-aisle fleet, enabling the carrier to serve more passengers on high-density routes while benefiting from the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle aircraft.

The type will also maintain commonality with Alaska’s existing next-generation 737 and 737 MAX fleet, enhancing operational and network flexibility.

The 787 Dreamliner order underpins Alaska Airlines’ long-haul ambitions, offering the range, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort required for international markets.

The aircraft’s advanced aerodynamics, composite structure and modern cabin design make it well suited to supporting the airline’s planned global network expansion.

Stephanie Pope, president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said: “This is a historic airplane order underwritten by Alaska Airlines’ record of strong performance and strategic expansion.

“All of us at Boeing are proud of Alaska’s success and are honoured they have placed their trust in our people and our 737 and 787 airplanes to help grow their airline.”

The agreement coincides with the 60th anniversary of the partnership between Boeing and Alaska Airlines, which began with the delivery of a 727.

Alaska currently operates 248 737 aircraft and has 174 737 MAX jets on order. The addition of the 737-10 will further strengthen fleet flexibility as the airline continues to modernise.

Alaska Airlines also has five 787 Dreamliners already in service, with the latest order bringing its total widebody backlog to 12 aircraft.

The airline aims to serve at least 12 international destinations over the next few years as it continues to expand its global footprint.
