GKN Aerospace has signed a joint venture agreement with Comac subsidiary Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Company (SAMC) and AVIC Supply for the manufacture of composite and metallic aerostructures in China.

GKN Aerospace said the opening of an 80,000sq m facility in Jingjiang, Jiangsu Province marked a significant milestone in its strategy to grow within the commercial aerospace market in China. It is the company’s first aerostructures JV in China.

The facility will offer Comac, AVIC and western customers the opportunity to access a local supply of advanced aerostructures in the country. Production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021.

In addition to the JV facility, GKN Aerospace said it was in final preparations to open a separate 20,000sq m site in Jingjiang in April 2021 focusing on the manufacture of transparencies for the commercial market.

GKN Aerospace’s president Civil Aerospace John Pritchard commented: “We are proud to extend our footprint in China by working together with our committed partners Comac, SAMC and AVIC Supply. The collaboration with the local authorities and support of the regional government has been vital. I am sure the combination of our dedicated teams, technology leadership and extensive aerospace experience will lead to exciting growth opportunities. We are excited to be part of the growth of the commercial aerospace industry in China.”
