Hamad International Airport unveils new concourses to enhance the travel experience
Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Qatar has unveiled its new concourses D and E, marking the end of the DOH 2018 expansion plan to introduce cutting-edge technologies and improved facilities, in response to a growing demand in travel.
The expansion project is expected to elevate the traveller comfort, improve international connectivity, and reinforce DOH as a global hub for aviation.
The new concourses have expanded the existing terminal by 14% to 842,000 sqm and added 17 new aircraft contact gates, nearly 40% more than before, bringing its total to 62.
It also features new self-boarding systems which aim to streamline the boarding process for more efficient travels, as well as smart technology that enables easier document verification, reduced wait times, and facilitates the terminal-to-aircraft transition.
The upgraded concourses will allow the airport to accommodate more international carriers and offer more direct routes to global hubs, as a result of increased gate capacities and optimised flight operations.
Qatar Airways Group chief executive officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said of the expansion: “While many global airport expansions have faced delays, we are proud to have delivered this major development ahead of schedule… This is not just about increasing capacity—it is about strengthening the entire Qatar Airways network, enhancing operational resilience, and supporting Qatar’s economic growth in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. This development allows us to meet the evolving demands of global travel while reinforcing Qatar’s position as a leading aviation hub.”
In line with the airport’s assertions that it is committed to sustainable aviation, concourses D and E were designed to meet the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) 4-Star Design & Build Certification, aiming for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification.
The designs incorporate energy efficient systems, innovative water management solutions, and optimised thermal comfort strategies.
To support accessibility, there is also hearing loops, barrier-free pathways, spacious seating areas, and dedicated assistance services.
Following the renovation, Qatar Duty free will also unveil more than 10 new retail outlets and food and beverage venues, bringing the airport’s retail space up to 2,700 sqm.
DOH chief operating officer, Hamad Ali Al Khater, added: “Our focus is to deliver operational excellence that supports both current demands and future growth. The opening of Concourses D and E marks a significant milestone in expanding our capacity and enhancing operational efficiency.
“This combined development streamlines passenger flow, optimises resource management, and strengthens airline connectivity, ensuring smoother and more efficient passenger services.”
