Japan Airlines nearly doubles 737-8 order book with 17 new jets deal
Japan Airlines (JAL) has placed an ordered for 17 additional Boeing 737-8s, nearly doubling its 737 MAX backlog to 38 firm orders.
JAL says it aims to launch the new 737 MAX jets on its robust domestic network, benefitting from the 737-8s 15% reduction in fuel use and carbon emissions compared to the Next-Generation 737-800 that it will be replacing.
JAL are set to debut the Boeing Sky Interior with the 737-8, which offers passengers an elevated cabin experience with advanced features such as LED lighting, larger windows, and spacious overhead bins.
The Japanese flag carrier has been a longtime customer of Boeing, currently operating 767s, 777s, and the Next-Generation 737-800s, and was one of the first airlines to adopt the 787 Dreamliner.
It already has more than 50 787-8s and 787-9s in operation and recently ordered 10 additional 787-9s to help meet growing demand for international travel.
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing, said of the new orders: “We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are honoured by their decision to double down on the 737 MAX for the airline’s fleet modernisation program. By selecting the 737-8, Japan Airlines will gain operational and economic efficiencies, positioning them for success in the years ahead.”
Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines, added: “The 737 has been the backbone of our single-aisle fleet for nearly 50 years, and we are honoured to continue its legacy as part of our future fleet. We are excited to add more 737-8s to deliver a safe and secure journey to our valued customers with a sophisticated flying experience.”
