Lufthansa could increase it’s stake in Italy’s ITA Airways to 90% according to newspaper reports.
The German airline group currently owns 41% of ITA, which was born from the remains of the former flag carrier Alitalia in 2021.
In a story reported in Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, Lufthansa Group will pay another €325 million for the additional 49%, plus €100 million in a performance related bonus.

Although the report stresses that negotiations are in the ‘preliminary’ stage, if successful a deal could be in place by the end of June 2026.
Speaking to the newspaper, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr explained: “Progress on ITA is better than planned and the same can also be said from a financial point of view”, adding that integration is ‘proceeding quickly’.
“ITA is not yet at the point of having a sufficient profitability margin, we knew that it would take more than a year to see solid results. However, I can say that I am happy with where we are with the investment,” said Spohr.
The news will come as little surprise to investors in both companies. Shortly after winning approval to acquire 41% in July 2024 publicly stated that a 90% stake would be possible.
