Iceland-based LCC Play Airlines has ceased operations.

A statement on the website confirms that all flights have been cancelled and that customers are advised to check flights with other airlines.

The airline was formed in 2019 from the ashes of WOW, a similar Icelandic LCC. The airline flew to destinations across Europe with a fleet of 10 leased Airbus A321s run by a team of approximately 400 staff.

Changes to Play’s business model had been mooted throughout 2025, with a plan to give up it’s local AOC and become a ‘virtual airline’, retaining the AOC held by it’s Maltese subsidiary and transitioning to a privately held company.

However, these plans never came to fruition and the airline ran out of time and money on September 29.
