Construction of Hangar H4 to begin at Katowice Airport
The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA), the managing authority of Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport in Pyrzowice, Poland, has signed an agreement with PROMUS Ruda Śląska for the construction of the site’s fourth aircraft maintenance hangar.
The project will take 12 months to complete, with the new facility expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2026.
Wizz Air will lease Hangar H4, which will span 11,200 sqm and feature two bays for servicing aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
The hangar will include a three-story support area with office, training, and workshop spaces, as well as a paint shop. At 17.5 metres high, it will be located next to the existing Hangar H3 and positioned near the airport’s air traffic control tower.
Once completed, the airport’s MRO area will expand to 34,400 sqm, with four hangars and eight bays for complex aircraft maintenance.
The project is part of Katowice Airport’s PLN 1.5 billion investment programme for 2024-2032, which also includes a new passenger terminal, expanded parking facilities, a second cargo terminal, and a multimodal goods and fuel hub co-funded by the EU’s ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ initiative.
Artur Tomasik, president of the board of the GTL S.A., said: “GTL S.A. aims to provide advanced infrastructure for aircraft maintenance; that’s why we have been continuously expanding the MRO area at Katowice Airport for many years now. The fourth hangar translates to further 200-300 new workplaces for qualified staff, representing various branches of aviation. We are currently preparing a plan for further expansion of the MRO base. We want more objects for aircraft maintenance to be built at Katowice Airport in the future.”
Maciej Wiora, technical director at PROMUS Ruda Śląska, said: “We are happy that we may realise another ambitious project with GTL S.A. which will contribute towards growth of Katowice Airport‘s infrastructure. Collaborating on this investment is a big responsibility, but at the same time an opportunity to benefit from experience and best practice that will ensure smooth functioning of the new hangar.”
