FIA 2026: Pratt & Whitney secures GTF engine and services agreement with Tigerair Taiwan

Taiwanese low-cost airline Tigerair Taiwan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pratt & Whitney for GTF engines to power 15 Airbus A321neo aircraft, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the engine manufacturer as it expands its fleet.

The agreement, announced during this year’s Farnborough International Airshow, covers four firm aircraft and 11 leased A321neos, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028.

Alongside the engine selection, Pratt & Whitney will provide maintenance support through a 12-year EngineWise® Comprehensive services agreement, giving the airline predictable maintenance costs while supporting fleet reliability and operational efficiency.

Tigerair Taiwan already operates nine Airbus A320neo family aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, alongside nine Airbus A320ceo aircraft equipped with IAE V2500 engines.

Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney, said: “This latest GTF order reaffirms Tigerair Taiwan’s trust in Pratt & Whitney, which exclusively powers the airline’s fleet. The GTF engine will continue to enable Tigerair Taiwan’s regional fleet expansion while delivering best-in-class fuel efficiency.”

Joyce Huang, chairperson of Tigerair Taiwan, said: “Pratt & Whitney has been a trusted partner since we began operations in 2014. Our new A321neo fleet, powered by the GTF engine, will advance our next phase of growth, as we continue to serve more passengers across more destinations with a lower cost per seat.”

According to Pratt & Whitney, the GTF engine offers 20% lower fuel consumption and a 75% smaller noise footprint compared with the previous generation of engines.

More than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are currently in service with over 90 operators worldwide, while the programme has accumulated an order backlog of more than 8,000 engines.

The company said the geared architecture developed for the GTF will also underpin its next generation of propulsion technologies.
