Recently-launched Skyway Airlines of the Philippines has named Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) as its handling agent for new dedicated freighter services to Hong Kong, with a strategic focus on e-commerce cargo.
Hactl will deliver a full suite of services for the airline, including terminal and ramp handling, as well as documentation support, under a one-stop-shop model.
Skyway Airlines operates six weekly flights using its 18-tonne capacity Boeing 737-400 freighters – three to its hub at Clark International Airport and three to Manila. Hong Kong marks the airline’s first international destination.
Comprising more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines presents unique logistical hurdles. While air cargo has traditionally been transported in passenger aircraft belly holds, the country’s booming e-commerce market – accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic – has driven demand for dedicated freighter services. Skyway Airlines is responding to this need, linking the Philippines with the world’s busiest international air cargo hub.
Jose Angelo Peralta, president and chief executive of Skyway Airlines, said: “It has been a big leap for Skyway to fly internationally to Hong Kong after acquiring our Air Operator Certificate. We are very pleased to have the one-stop service support from Hactl for our freighter operation into Hong Kong International Airport, which greatly reduced our challenges in the service launch.
“We hope to contribute to the trade development between Hong Kong and the Philippines.”
Hactl’s executive director for commercial and business development, Joanna Li, said: “Skyway Airlines is an interesting new venture that fills a very real need for the Philippines. We welcome this latest addition to our carrier family, which further extends our global connections.
“We wish Skyway Airlines every success with this first international service, and we greatly look forward to supporting the airline in growing its business.”
