Global air cargo demand grew by 8.5% year-on-year in June 2026, continuing the sector's strong momentum as demand outpaced capacity growth across almost every region, according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Capacity increased by 4.4% during the month, allowing cargo load factors to strengthen as airlines continued to benefit from demand for high-value technology shipments and time-sensitive freight.

North American airlines recorded the strongest regional performance, with cargo demand rising 13.1% compared with June 2025. 

Asia-Pacific carriers posted a 7.9% increase, while European airlines saw demand grow by 6.9%.

Middle Eastern carriers reported 5.6% growth, although IATA noted the comparison was against a particularly weak June 2025, when military conflict disrupted operations across the region. 

Latin American and Caribbean airlines recorded the slowest growth at 3.5%, while African carriers saw demand increase by 4.7% despite a 7.1% reduction in capacity.

IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said: "Air cargo demand grew 8.5% year-on-year in June. While North America was the strongest contributor to growth, demand in all regions was in positive territory compared to last year.

"Demand growth outpaced capacity at the global level and in all regions except Latin America and the Caribbean. Demand also grew faster than global trade, supported by high-value technology products, and urgent shipments.

"While this all gives strong reasons for optimism in the second half of 2026, risks remain - continuing hostilities in the Middle East and a renewed focus on tariffs by the US among them."

Across major trade lanes, Asia–North America recorded the strongest growth in June, followed by within Asia, Europe–Asia and Africa–Asia markets. 

However, IATA said cargo flows on Gulf-linked trade lanes continued to be affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
