Base Maintenance Malaysia (BMM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC), has graduated its first cohort of 55 trainee technicians, marking a key step in building Malaysia’s aerospace workforce.

The milestone comes as the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is set to drive significant global fleet growth and MRO demand, intensifying the need for skilled technical talent. Against this backdrop, Malaysia’s MRO sector faces increasing pressure to accelerate the development of homegrown capabilities.

BMM launched its structured Technician Trainee Programme to support this need, aligning with the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework. More than 100 technicians have enrolled in the programme to date.

The 12-month scheme combines classroom instruction with supervised, hands-on training, covering maintenance fundamentals, safety and regulatory compliance, human factors, aviation legislation, and aircraft systems familiarisation.

The graduation ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Ng Sze Han, Selangor State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility, highlighting collaboration between industry and government to strengthen the talent pipeline.

BMM has also partnered with local training institutions including Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT), ADMAL Aviation College and APR Aviation Training Centre to provide students with exposure to live maintenance environments and pathways towards licensing.

The initiative supports Malaysia’s Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, which aims to position the country as a regional MRO hub.

Lee Yang Loong, chief executive of BMM, said: "Developing skilled Malaysian aerospace professionals is central to our long-term investment in Malaysia's aerospace sector.

"As global demand for MRO capacity continues to grow, a strong local talent pipeline is not just an aspiration, but a business imperative."
