Industrial chemist Nova Pangaea Technologies reports that it has successfully completed extended endurance trials for SAF produced from waste biomass at its Teesside demonstration plant.
The trials achieved continuous stable operation for up to 72 hours and delivered yields 'above target levels', according to the company.
Stating that the successful trials should boost investor confidence, Stewart Stewart, CEO of Nova Pangaea, said: “By tapping into the plentiful supplies of waste biomass, we can boost SAF production - enhancing our energy security and building a new domestic industry that generates jobs and revenues while reducing fossil fuel emissions.”
The company is working with British Airways and LanzaJet on Project Speedbird, an initiative supported by the UK government to produce carbon-negative aviation fuel from local waste biomass to decarbonise the aviation sector.
Nova Pangaea is not yet a SAF producer at commercial scale, but it is one of the more credible UK companies attempting to solve the industry's long-term feedstock problem. The company's significance lies less in the fuel volumes it produces today and more in whether it can prove that waste biomass such as sawdust and wheat straw can become a scalable alternative to used cooking oil for future SAF production. Its partnerships with British Airways and LanzaJet give it a level of industry credibility that many early-stage SAF developers lack.
