MSC Air Cargo has placed its first order for Boeing's 777-8 Freighter, committing to five aircraft as it looks to support the long-term expansion of its cargo network.
The order, which had previously been listed as unidentified on Boeing's order book, marks the fast-growing cargo airline's first purchase of the next-generation freighter.
The 777-8 Freighter is Boeing's latest dedicated cargo aircraft, combining the technologies of the 777X programme with design features from the current-generation 777 Freighter.
Boeing says the aircraft will offer the highest payload and the lowest fuel consumption, emissions and operating cost per tonne in the large freighter segment.

"The 777-8 Freighter gives us the efficiency, range and capacity to serve our customers reliably for years to come, while advancing our commitment to more sustainable operations. It is the right aircraft for the next stage of our growth."
Announced at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow, the acquisition comes as MSC Air Cargo continues to expand its global operations, with the new aircraft expected to strengthen the carrier's long-haul capabilities and improve operating efficiency.

"The 777-8 Freighter will be the most efficient aircraft in its class and will connect MSC Air Cargo's hubs to key international markets."
Boeing has now secured more than 80 orders for the 777-8 Freighter, with MSC Air Cargo becoming the third Europe-based cargo airline to commit to the aircraft.
