Dublin-based SMBC Aviation Capital has ordered 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including its first purchase of the 737-10 variant, as the lessor expands its narrowbody portfolio to meet long-term airline demand.

Announced at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow, the order comprises 60 737-10s and 40 737-8s, taking SMBC Aviation Capital’s owned, managed and committed 737 MAX portfolio to 450 aircraft.

Peter Barrett, chief executive officer of SMBC Aviation Capital, said: “This transaction represents a significant milestone for SMBC Aviation Capital and will ensure our airline customers have access to a long-term pipeline of new technology aircraft.

“Our partnership with Boeing spans over two decades and this order reflects market dynamics as our airline and investor customers look to upgauge to the 737-10. This order will support their growth ambitions well into the next decade and reflects our strong confidence in the Boeing 737 MAX and sustained demand for fuel-efficient, technologically advanced narrowbody aircraft.”

The order marks the lessor’s first commitment to Boeing’s largest 737 MAX variant, which seats up to 230 passengers and is aimed at airlines seeking greater capacity on single-aisle routes.
