When people hear that I am an operations director at East Midlands Airport and an Aviation Ambassador for the Department for Transport (DfT), they often assume I always knew exactly where my career would take me.
The truth is, I didn't.
Like many young people, I started with a passion, a willingness to learn, and no clear roadmap.
My journey has taught me that careers are rarely straightforward. They are built through hard work, resilience, and saying "yes" to opportunities that push you beyond your comfort zone.
Today as an Aviation Ambassador, one of the greatest privileges of my career, is inspiring young people to believe that they can achieve more than they ever imagined.
Where it all began
My journey started as a travel and tourism student at Walsall College. At the time, I had no idea of the types of roles in aviation, but I knew I wanted to work in an exciting industry where every day would be different, but I never imagined that one day I would be leading airport operations.
Looking back, I realise that no qualification or job is ever wasted. Every lesson, every challenge, and every experience helped prepare me for the next opportunity.

Building my career one step at a time
People often see the job title, but they don't always see the journey behind it.
I began as an aviation security officer, ensuring passengers, baggage, and cargo travelled safely and securely.
From there, I progressed to airfield security, control room operations, airfield operations supervisor, airport duty manager, head of airfield operations, and finally operations director.
Each role taught me something different.
I learned how to stay calm under pressure.
How to make difficult decisions.
How to lead teams.
How to solve problems quickly.
Most importantly, I learned that leadership isn't about having all the answers it's about supporting others, making safe decisions, and never stopping learning.
Aviation is more than flying
When young people think about aviation, they often think of pilots or cabin crew.
The reality is that aviation is one of the world's most diverse industries.
Behind every flight are thousands of professionals working in operations, engineering, security, customer experience, logistics, sustainability, technology, air traffic management, finance, communications, and many other specialist roles.
It is an industry where teamwork matters. Every person plays an important role in ensuring passengers travel safely and efficiently.
Becoming an Aviation Ambassador
One of the proudest parts of my career has been becoming an Aviation Ambassador for the DfT.
For me, this role is about much more than talking about airports.
It is about helping young people see opportunities they may never have considered, it is about breaking down barriers. It is about showing that your background does not define your future.
Every time I speak in a school, college, or community group, I hope that at least one young person leaves believing they are capable of achieving something extraordinary. Because sometimes all someone needs are one person to believe in them.
The future of aviation
There has never been a more exciting time to join aviation.
Every year, millions more people travel by air, creating opportunities across airports, airlines, engineering, technology, logistics, and sustainability.
At the same time, the industry is transforming through innovation, digital technology, artificial intelligence, and the drive towards more sustainable aviation.
The next generation won't just work in aviation they will shape its future.
My advice to young people
Never stop being curious: Ask questions, learn from people around you, take every opportunity to gain experience. Curiosity will take you further than you think.
Don't be afraid to start small: Every successful career begins with a first step; every role teaches valuable skills that will help you grow.
Say yes to opportunities: Some of the biggest moments in my career happened because I stepped outside my comfort zone, growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable.
Resilience is key: There will be setbacks, not every interview will be successful, not every opportunity will go your way. What matters is getting back up, learning from the experience, and continuing to move forward.
Believe in yourself: Confidence isn't something you're born with, it grows every time you challenge yourself, overcome obstacles, and achieve something you once thought was impossible, believe in your potential. Others will too.
A career without limits
If someone had told the younger version of me - a travel and tourism student with big ambitions but no clear roadmap - that one day I would become operations director at East Midlands Airport, leading teams responsible for the safe and efficient operation at UK airport, I probably wouldn't have believed them.
Yet here I am…
Not because I had all the answers, but because I kept saying yes to opportunities, embraced every challenge, and never stopped learning.
That is why I am so passionate about sharing my story through being an Aviation Ambassador.
Not because it is extraordinary, but because it proves that careers are built by ordinary people who choose to keep moving forward.
The path ahead may not be straight. It may take unexpected turns, test your resilience, and push you far beyond your comfort zone.
But those moments are often where the greatest growth happens.
