London City Airport has selected Amadeus to supply biometric check-in and automated bag-drop infrastructure that all airlines at the airport will share.

The airport aims to increase passenger capacity within its existing terminal building as it grows towards its permitted cap of nine million passengers a year.

The London City Airport biometric check-in programme covers Amadeus self-service kiosks and automated bag-drop units. The equipment is common-use, so carriers will not need dedicated, airline-specific hardware.

Passengers will enrol their biometrics once per trip and then use that enrolment through check-in and bag drop. The rollout covers the full process from check-in to boarding.

LCY has already moved its passenger processing to the cloud through the Amadeus Airport Cloud Use Service (ACUS), which is now available throughout the terminal.

ACUS lets airlines run their passenger service applications on shared airport infrastructure instead of fixed desks assigned to each airline.

Under this model, ground staff can serve passengers from any location in the terminal. That changes how operators at the airport deploy check-in staff and use desk space.

The airport has not disclosed the contract value, the deployment timeline or the number of kiosks and bag-drop units to be installed.

Ian Cowie, senior director airport operations at London City Airport, said: “Working with Amadeus and its open, multi-cloud technology to transform our operations and the full check-in to boarding experience means we can further reduce queues, increase capacity, and operate more efficiently.”

Georges Fenergi, senior vice president, airports and border authorities, EMEA, at Amadeus, said: “By leveraging self-service options, shared infrastructure and biometric technology, London City Airport can more efficiently operate with stakeholders, better manage traveler flows, and offer a seamless end-to-end journey from check-in to boarding.”
