American Airlines is ramping up its premium offering on short-haul routes with the rollout of newly retrofitted Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, entering service from this summer.
The upgraded narrowbodies feature expanded premium cabins, redesigned interiors and enhanced onboard technology, as the carrier pushes to standardise its product across the fleet and capture growing demand for higher-end seating.
Both aircraft types will debut a refreshed cabin design aligned with American’s latest long-haul and next-generation narrowbody deliveries, including the Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR. The retrofits introduce more premium seats, rising to 12 on the A319 and 16 on the A320, alongside upgraded finishes and improved passenger comfort.
Modifications include larger overhead bins, power and USB‑C outlets at every seat, and new mood lighting. Premium passengers will see the most significant upgrade, with redesigned seats featuring privacy wings, additional personal storage and dual cocktail tray tables.
American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the changes are designed to “strengthen the journey from curb to cabin” while addressing core passenger needs such as space, connectivity and comfort.
Beyond hardware upgrades, the airline is refining its onboard service. Premium cabins will offer updated, chef-inspired menus and an enhanced beverage programme, while Main Cabin passengers will see new meal and snack options.
