AerometricX has announced a psychometric test battery built specifically for pilot recruitment.
The battery differs from general psychometric tools adapted for aviation, having been built around competencies specific to professional pilots.
It covers 11 dimensions, including spatial reasoning, airplane attitude awareness, memory capacity, reaction speed, multitasking and aviation-relevant personality traits, structured across four domains: cognitive abilities, personality traits, operational and professional competences, and social and crew resource management competences.
The tool was developed by AAP Aviation, SIAP (aviation psychologists) and University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre to help airlines, approved training organisations and flight schools meet the EASA requirements.
The battery is designed for administration by trained recruiters without specialist certification, with an evaluation and interpretation framework built by an aviation psychologist.
Assessments are delivered through a secure web-based platform, with tailored versions for three pilot profiles: captain and type rating examiner or instructor, first officer, and cadet.
"The test was designed to identify the characteristics and competencies that an effective pilot profile should have for safe and effective flight operations," said Alejandro Salinas, head of pilot recruitment at AAP Aviation. "That combination is what we set out to build."
Vesselin Popov, executive director at the University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre, said the Centre worked with AAP Aviation to combine academic psychometric practice with recruitment experience. "We believe the end result is an impactful set of measurement tools that are scientific, pragmatic and well aligned to the needs of modern aviation," Popov said.
AAP Aviation, founded in 2013 and headquartered in Lysaker, Norway, provides crew management, recruitment, training and flight operational support services internationally.
