Philippine Airlines (PAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rolls-Royce for 18 Trent XWB-97 engines to power nine additional Airbus A350-1000 aircraft as the carrier advances its long-haul fleet expansion.

Announced at this week’s Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement also covers engines for up to five additional A350-1000s under the airline’s purchase rights.

Alongside the engine order, PAL has selected Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare service, which will provide health monitoring and maintenance support for the growing fleet.

The agreements form part of the airline’s fleet modernisation programme, supporting its strategy to operate a modern, fuel-efficient and reliable long-haul fleet.

The Trent XWB-97 is the exclusive powerplant for the Airbus A350-1000 and is designed to deliver high levels of fuel efficiency, reliability and environmental performance.

Rob Watson, president of civil aerospace at Rolls-Royce, said: “Combined with the comprehensive operational support provided by TotalCare, this order will enable Philippine Airlines to maximise their operational performance as they continue expanding their A350-1000 fleet.”
